Production Intelligence
The Production Intelligence layer is responsible for interpreting the technical and semantic meaning of a print document.
While the Preflight Engine extracts deterministic facts from the PDF, Production Intelligence interprets those facts in the context of real manufacturing workflows.
Purpose
Production Intelligence answers key questions such as:
- What type of publication is this?
- Is the document manufacturable?
- Is the binding physically feasible?
- Does the document match the declared production specification?
This layer transforms raw analysis data into production-aware insights.
Core Components
The Production Intelligence layer includes several subsystems.
Intent Detection
Intent Detection attempts to determine the type of publication represented by the document.
Examples include:
- paperback novel
- hardcover photo book
- saddle-stitched booklet
- magazine
- catalog
The system evaluates signals such as:
- page count
- image density
- trim size
- page layout patterns
These signals are aggregated into an intent classification.
Binding Intelligence
Binding Intelligence evaluates whether the document can physically support the requested binding method.
It performs checks such as:
- page count feasibility
- theoretical spine calculation
- detected spine validation
- binding compatibility with paper type
This allows the system to detect problems such as:
- excessive page counts
- unrealistic spine dimensions
- incompatible binding selections
Specification Cross-Checks
Production Intelligence compares the uploaded PDF against the declared production specification.
Examples of checks include:
- PDF page count vs declared page count
- trim box vs specified trim size
- detected layout vs intended binding type
These cross-checks ensure that the document matches the job definition.
Output
The output of Production Intelligence includes:
- detected publication intent
- binding feasibility evaluation
- cross-check findings
- structured evidence
This information feeds directly into the Compatibility Engine.
Strategic Importance
Production Intelligence is one of the most innovative components of the PrintPrice platform.
It enables the system to reason about manufacturing reality, not just technical file validity.
By combining semantic interpretation with deterministic analysis, PrintPrice can move from simple validation toward automated production planning.
